Composer Laurence Armstrong Hughes
An exponent of ‘new lyricism’, Laurence Armstrong Hughes’s works embody those peculiarly English qualities of dignity, passion, and nostalgia.

Laurence read Music and Theatre at the University of York before studying Composition with Nicola LeFanu at King’s College, London. His music - which covers a wide range of genres from symphonic works, through choral music and songs, to light music - has been performed across the UK, and in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania.
He has written music for three BBC2 films directed by David Hevey: Freak Out (1995), Remember Me (1996), and Mystics (1999), and for a three-part BBC TV documentary series, The Disabled Century.
Laurence's works have been performed by many distinguished groups, including the New London Children’s Choir, the BBC Singers, the New London Collegium, Eton College Chapel Choir, the Leningrad State Chamber Orchestera, the choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor, the St Petersburg Camerata, and the English Chamber Choir. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and in July 2002 he presented a feature on the ‘White Nights’ Festival in St Petersburg for BBC Radio 4. Since 1989, Laurence Hughes has been a busy freelance writer, contributing to The Independent, Tempo, and the BBC Music Magazine.
In 2008 Laurence signed an exclusive contract with Wild Woods Music, who will release new editions of over fifty of his works before 2011.
