
Matthew Mills began to study the piano when he was ten years old. He read Music at Christ Church, Oxford, where he won numerous prizes and graduated with first class honours. During his time at Oxford, he studied the piano with Christopher Elton. He then attended Trinity College of Music, London, where he studied Composition with Andrew Lovett and Daryl Runswick, and Conducting with Gregory Rose, winning several prizes and gaining the Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction. He then pursued a PhD in Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London, under the supervision of Simon Holt. He has participated in piano masterclasses with Beryl Chempin, Rosalyn Tureck and John Lill, and composition workshops with Michael Finnissey, Rhiân Samuel and George Benjamin. Matthew is deeply committed to the performance of contemporary music. His interest in twentieth-century piano music led to a period of study with Rolf Hind, enabled by an award from Oxford University. In 2000, he founded the Royal Holloway New Music Ensemble, with whom he performed works by Birtwistle, Holt, Britten, and numerous student composers. As a pianist, his wide-ranging repertoire includes music by figures such as Schoenberg, Berio, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Messiaen, Shchedrin, Cowell, and Bernstein, which he frequently programmes alongside music from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.Matthew now maintains a busy schedule of playing, conducting, composing, teaching and research. In 2004, he founded Wild Woods Music, a company dedicated to the furthering of musical understanding and involvement at all levels. Matthew is Musical Director of the Oast House Singers, a Trustee of Dudley Piano Competition, an Associate of Trinity College, London, and a Licentiate of the London College of Music. Forthcoming projects include a chamber opera, numerous educational events, recordings of the piano sonatas of Beethoven and Mozart, and piano music by Schumann, and concert performances, including Grieg's Piano Concerto.
